Who is Nehemiah?
Nehemiah was a visionary who wanted to help people nearly 2,500 years ago. He wanted to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem to protect its inhabitants. He possessed incredible leadership skills and held many of his values and morals close to heart.
In 445 BC, the brave and noble Nehemiah was the cup bearer for King Artaxerxes of Persia. He had only one responsibility as a cup bearer and that was to taste the wine before it was given to the King to make sure that it wasn't poisoned. A courageous man, indeed, was Nehemiah. He knew that looking out for the King would be what would help his land from falling prey to governance in the wrong hands.
Around 605 BC, Jerusalem's buildings were destroyed. At the time of Nehemiah, many new structures were being created, but the inhabitants still felt burdened and scared. There wasn't any wall around Jerusalem and everyone felt very vulnerable to an attack by outside forces. Since Nehemiah was cup bearer for the King, he was in the palace quite often. On one occasion, he spoke to the King about the fears of Jerusalem's inhabitants. The King told the young man to go to Jerusalem and build a wall for his people. Obviously, the King had a great respect for Nehemiah since he allowed him to leave. The wall in Jerusalem was built in only 52 days with the help of everyone.
Nehemiah cared for people and when faced with their concerns, he was always the one wanting to take charge and help alleviate the problem. This is only one story of Nehemiah's leadership, but there are many others. He eventually became governor of Jerusalem.
